sanghyo trolling, technology, and theology about blog ode to my father by paul / jun 18, 2017 / opinon hear, o sons, a father’s instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight, for i give you good precepts; do not forsake my teaching. when i was a son with my father, tender, the only one in the sight of my mother, he taught me and said to me, “let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments, and live. proverbs 4:1 – 4 when my grandfather died, my dad had told me that he had spent several hours out on the deck thinking about him. he sat there pondering all the things that he wished he had said, of all of the feelings that he never once expressed to the now deceased. this was strange to me. my memories of my grandfather were often of sitting at his table, wondering if he was more disappointed by the children around him or by the swill of fatherhood left in his scotch glass. he was a hard, demanding man, but his strength had protected the family. that coarseness is his legacy. no one was ever allowed to disagree with him; to raise objection was to invite calamity. so as i sat there, hearing my father’s retelling how he chose to mourn over his father, i realized that at that very moment, i had never disagreed more with my own. i remember the nights spent reading the bible together when i was younger. dad would come in after a long day of work to share scripture with me. he walked me through the faith of noah, the bravery of daniel, and the wisdom of solomon. these stories weren’t just lessons for me to memorize, he often challenged my understanding and examination of the texts. i almost never got the answers “right” but that wasn’t the point, he tried to teach me to consider scripture, to approach it critically; it was a way for him to teach me how to read the bible, while communicating a faith that scripture could withstand any scrutiny. my dad sharpened my mind with his questioning but he grew my faith with his example. my most vivid memories of those nights were how they ended: with prayer. i assume most christian fathers pray for kindness or goodness in their children: for them to be nice to other kids or obedient to their parents. but that was never what my dad prayed for me. he just prayed for one thing wisdom. he never prayed for me to be successful or famous; he prayed that i would learn discernment, execute sound judgement, and that i would hold fast to divine truth. i believe that as a young father, the greatest blessing he could hope for his son was for him to see the world as the titans of faith did: through the eyes of their divine creator. i still remember going to sleep those nights hoping and praying that someday, i would finally find that wisdom dad prayed for me. my dad is blind, a genetic disorder slowly took his vision from about the moment that i was born. people sometimes tell me how hard it must have been to grow up with a blind father, but i never saw my dad as blind, he was just my dad. in a weird way, his blindness has become something that i envy. he doesn’t see the nice clothes people wear, the beauty they are endowed with, or the greatness of their possessions. my dad only knows the airs in their diction, the content of their actions, and quality of their character. he literally can’t see anything else. this seems to confer a natural advantage, he isn’t distracted by saccharine illusions of ego, in fact, such efforts only heighten a flimsiness in stature. i’ve never known my dad to be impressed by anything but effort and integrity, an appreciation that has led to… mixed outcomes in my own life but undoubtedly is a boon to those around him. going through your teenage years in 70’s america was not easy. as an newly immigrant family in suburban oregon, the kim family experienced much adversity. stories of those years are filled with racial slurs, strange associations to bruce lee, and a violent balance between choosing to be korean or american, but never both, at a given moment. my dad’s siblings, like himself, found this navigation often difficult, if not impossible, and sometimes lashed out at their culture or their new country. my aunts and uncles have told me that in those days, my dad learned to be a peacemaker. when my grandparents argued with a sibling, my dad would step in and try to explain as a korean son. when problems arose from outside the family (i.e. from white-american culture) my dad was the educated young oriental man who acted as a cultural intermediary. he learned that humor can snip the fuse of an explosive confrontation and a willingness to listen is a balm to the suffering. over the years i have met countless men and women who have told me of how my father came to use these lessons to change their lives. how, when they railed against their own parents, my dad sat down and recognized their struggle. how he spent his twenties serving them at church, or translating for them, pro-bono, in business meetings, and counseled them in their marriages or times of abuse. in those days, he learned that the greatest joy in life is found in the pursuit of god: to do the work that jesus did, to serve the poor, the sojourner, and the marginal. to sacrifice on behalf of the stranger and the cynic. to see the goodness in the hearts of men even when you cannot see at all. when i was about to head off to nyu for undergrad, my dad sat me down and asked me, “paul, why do you study? why is it that you try to be successful?”. i answered, “so i can get a good job and live life without suffering?” to my surprise, he answered, “no, we study, we try hard to learn, and try to be successful so we can help more people. so that we can serve many. this is why we aim for success.” this is a truth that i have kept in my heart since. so sitting there, listening to him recount his mourning, i thought of my own day in his seat. someday, my dad will be gone. i have thought about this many times over many years, because it is a day that i solemnly fear will destroy me. however, on that day, i won’t wonder about whether or not i have told him enough of how i feel or if there were things that i should have shared with him. no. on that day, i shall wonder if i was able to show him the entirety of how thankful i am for him. i shall wonder if the kindness that i carry now is even a fraction of what he has shared with others. i shall wonder if the integrity of my character is worthy of the title of being his son. i shall wonder if i have sacrificed enough to pay for the sacrifices he has given me. i believe my dad was wrong. i think in the last days of his life, my grandfather was proud of him, as i am proud of him. my grandfather may have been harsh and demanding but he was no fool. i know that he saw the love and care found in the man that he raised. i know that he passed on knowing that although he left little room for my dad to speak in words, he understood him nonetheless in his actions. i know my grandfather knew my father deeply loved him, even if it troubled and hurt my dad to do so. i know that my grandfather knew that he had a good son, because i know that i have a good father. so dad, thank you. i hope that someday, i’ll find that wisdom that you prayed for, and that that day, you’ll be able to see the future you created with glorious clarity. happy father’s day. apparently farting naked can cause infection, you are ok if you are clothed by paul / mar 13, 2017 / uncategorized i just saw this on hackernews and it is absolutely hilarious. apparently a nurse was curious if her silent farting was causing infections in her patients, so a doctor went to go investigate. here are some of my favorite snippets from the study: “i contacted luke tennent, a microbiologist in canberra, and together we devised an experiment. he asked a colleague to break wind directly onto two petri dishes from a distance of 5 centimetres, first fully clothed, then with his trousers down.” and the conclusion? “our deduction is that the enteric zone in th
